The signs for readiness for solid food
when your baby is eight to ten months old are the same as the earlier signs but
with a few additions:
·
Can pick up items with
the thumb and forefinger
·
Can transfer items from
one hand to the other
·
Has a tendency to put
most things that he or she picks up in the mouth
·
Moves jaws in a chewing
motion
At this stage, you still need to
continue to breastfeed your baby but you can also feed him or her more solid
food. In the earlier stages, we focused more on soft solid food like purees and
mashed food but at this stage, you can begin to introduce soft finger food.
Some of the food that you can feed your
baby who is eight to ten months old include small amounts of soft, pasteurized
cheeses like cottage cheese, small pieces of ripe banana, small amounts of
mashed potatoes sans the milk and seasonings, and small amounts of well-cooked
scrambled eggs.
You can also up the amount that you give
your baby per feeding to ¼ to 1/3 cup for dairy, ¼ to ½ cup for fruit, ¼ to ½
cup for fortified cereal, ¼ to ½ cup for vegetables, and 1/8 to ¼ cup for
proteins like well-cooked fish or pureed chicken breast.
Don’t forget to introduce new food one
at a time with three days in between to make sure your baby is not allergic.
