How to Home School Your Child - Preparing for Non-Core Subjects

It is important to cover the four core subjects of math, science, communication arts, and social studies. However, there are many other subjects that should be taught for a well rounded education. There are sometimes textbooks available for these subjects, but most often it will be necessary to obtain materials and activities from around the internet.

One of the most important additional subjects for your child is computer skills. It is impossible to get by in today’s world without a good knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as typing and data entry skills. Luckily, planning for this subject is easy. Typing software is very inexpensive. Microsoft Office offers free tutorials on their site to walk anyone through learning the software, even if that individual has never so much as opened a document.

Other subjects may be more difficult. For example, children should have exposure to physical education. However, it is very difficult to teach a child via a physical education curriculum when they are the only one in the school; you won’t have the advantage of having multiple children for teams. One way to address this subject is to enroll your child in local little league sports teams. This way they can learn different sports in a friendly and social environment. You can also develop a regular exercise routine, which also breaks the monotony of the day and gives the child a break from routine studies.

Life skills is another subject that many homeschoolers include in their curriculum. This is a subject that public schools largely ignore – they just don’t have the time or resources to cover it. They leave it to parents to teach these skills and yet most parents do not have time after a long day of school and homework to teach their children anything.

Life skills can include anything from how to clean something properly, sewing, cooking, or budgeting and handling finances. This subject can include any skill necessary for your child to become a successful, independent individual. You can include it in the hours required for homeschooling.
