Depending
on the textbooks and workbooks you purchase, you may need to buy or seek out
additional curriculum materials. You may want to ensure you have additional
practice sheets for math and writing concepts in case your child needs
additional practice to understand the concepts. You will also want to make sure
you have appropriate testing materials for each subject so that you have a way
to measure your child’s understanding of the material.
There
are a lot of resources available online for finding additional curriculum
materials. You can get science lab ideas and activities for other subjects all
over the internet. You can also find cheap or free software that allows you to
create your own tests and math worksheets. These tools are invaluable to the
homeschooler.
You
may want to get other materials based on the grade level of your student and
the curriculum you choose. For younger students learning math, it is important
to have manipulatives. Manipulatives are tools for teaching math in a visual
way. You can get sets of cubes – some individual and others in stacks – to
teach counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For
geometry, you can get sets of geometrical shapes of all kinds, like those able
to stand on their own or fit together like a puzzle to create new shapes. These
math tools will be invaluable to you as you teach your young ones math concepts
that can be difficult to grasp.
One
of the most important groups of curriculum materials is often neglected by
homeschoolers. Science is a complex subject that requires more planning than
others, largely due to the need for conducting labs. Parents should ensure they
have all of the materials necessary to conduct any experiment necessary as part
of the curriculum. This may include burners, test tubes, dishes, microscopes,
slides, and various chemical solutions. You may also need magnets and other
items. You will need to look through the Science textbooks and curriculum
materials carefully to ensure you have all the materials you may require.
