Don’t
be afraid to stray from the norm when creating lesson plans. Homeschooling is
supposed to be more laid back and more fun than public school. The basis behind
homeschooling is that your child can broaden their minds and take in material
in new ways not offered in a more structured setting.
Include
lots of field trips in your lesson plans. Taking the child out of the classroom
(or from your kitchen table) will make the learning experience more fun and
exciting. You can even make the field trip a surprise. Don’t tell them where
you are going, but instead let them figure out how to apply the lesson for
themselves when you arrive. You can always guide them to the answers if they
don’t understand it right away.
There
is also a wealth of lesson planning ideas online, shared by both homeschoolers
and traditional school teachers. These lesson plans are often very creative,
and include activities that are interesting and fun, while still reinforcing
key concepts.
Don’t
be afraid to make your own lesson plans. If you have an idea of an activity
that will help your child learn or enjoy a concept, feel free to plan it out
and give it a try. Worst case scenario is that your child will not enjoy it or
learn anything. It may seem like time wasted in that case, but the experience
will lead you to create better lessons in the future. You never know if you
don’t try. In homeschooling, there is never a worry about losing ground. There
is always another hour, another day.
