When
developing your lesson plans, include time for discussions, especially with
subjects like science and social studies. Make sure you have schedule plenty of
time for your child to ask questions and state opinions. Don’t be afraid to
overrun on time with a discussion. If your child is learning and expressing
their thoughts, it is time well spent.
Homeschooling
provides a unique opportunity for children. In a public school there is a
limited amount of time for each lesson. Even when discussion time has been
planned, typically only a few students will actually get to speak before time
is up. In addition, children are encouraged to think the way the teacher wants
them to think and are often discouraged from forming their own opinions.
As
a homeschooler, you can ensure your child learns to think for himself. By
discussing topics openly and encouraging them to form their own opinions,
children open up their minds and unlock untold potential. You are developing a
well trained mind, capable of rational and linear thought that is able to reach
conclusions and form opinions. These children often become adults who think
outside the box, who are creative, and find unique solutions to problems that
present themselves. They are more outspoken and are more willing to stand up
for what they believe in. They become the children of our future that give us
hope.
